SOUND NOW

An update on the proposed audio system

Father Victor
The vestry voted in October to endorse a new sound system for our church, provided that at least 60% of its cost could be raised from new memorial gifts, including those gifts already received in Betty Willsey's memory. The remainder of the cost will be taken from undesignated gifts and accrued interest already in the memorial fund.

In my opinion, this is a very exciting development for our parish. A sound system can do much more than simply magnify sound. Its primary benefit is to enable intimacy, making a wider range of intonations audible throughout our church. The result has been described as making the speaker's voice what it would be if he were sitting across from you in your dining room. It doesn't make everything louder, but with computer-assisted technology enhances precisely and only those frequencies that are lost or distorted in our worship space. Additional benefits include the ability to play worshipful music, for instance, prior to a weekday service, and the option of recording services for the sake of making copies to take to shut-ins. In addition, the proposed system would place speakers in the narthex and undercroft, so that the church service could be heard there if desired. (The undercroft speaker will be equipped with volume control.)

The cost for this state-of-the-art system is a bit over $14,000. After careful consideration, a vestry task force decided that there is no feasible alternative at a lower cost. A good deal of the expense is labor; and all the equipment is the best digital available. The company, Monte Brothers, has done hundreds and hundreds of churches; churches are 90+% of their business; from all sides I have heard only praise for them. We could spend less money, but we would be buying unhappiness with the result over the long term.

If you are interested in this project, we need to know by the end of the year. Donations may be made to the Church, with the memo "in memory of Betty Willsey." Or, you could indicate how much you'd like to give in the future, if that's easier.
